Prostate Exam Prostatitis

Prostate Exam ProstatitisProstate exam for prostatitis are tests that check for infection and inflammation of the prostate. Prostatitis is more common among younger and middle-aged men. It can be caused by a recent injury to the groin area or by bacteria that is spread from the urethra into the prostate.

Prostate exam for prostatitis will be done after asking you several questions about your pain, discomfort, and urination patterns. Our doctors will perform a digital rectal exam to see if your prostate feels enlarged or inflamed. You may also have urine and semen tests to scan for any bacteria and white blood cells that would be fighting off an infection. Urethritis, or an inflammation of the urethra from a urethral infection caused by bacteria or a virus, can develop as a result of prostatitis. This can cause the urethra to swell, creating a urethral obstruction or urethral blockage. Urethral strictures and urethral irritation can cause you urethral pain while relieving yourself. In some cases, you may need to have a cystoscopy, which is an examination of the inside of the urethra and bladder using a cystoscope. Urodynamic tests can also check the function of your bladder to make sure you are able to empty it completely and steadily.

Prostate infection symptoms vary, but the most common are pain or discomfort in your pelvic area or groin, pain while urinating, difficulty urinating, and painful ejaculations. Other patients experience frequent urination, an urgent need to urinate, and pain in the abdomen, lower back, penis, testicles, or perineum. Patients with acute bacterial prostatitis may get a high fever, chills, and nausea. If you have chronic bacterial prostatitis you will get frequent urinary tract infections. Prostate medication for urinary tract infection treatment is typically antibiotics. Some patients prefer to take more natural urinary tract infection remedies, such as herbal supplements and certain drinks, like cranberry juice, to cure their infection.

Asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis produces no symptoms and is usually found only while undergoing tests for other prostate or urinary conditions. Some patients with chronic prostatitis (which is associated with chronic pelvic pain and can produce symptoms for three months or more) may need antibiotics for longer periods of time, perhaps even having them administered intravenously. Other patients find that a prostate massage or natural prostate supplements also help to relieve pain and discomfort. If left untreated, prostatitis can lead to a blood infection, infections of the testes, and abnormalities in semen that can cause infertility.

Prostate exam for prostatitis can help narrow down the type of prostate infection that you may have. When you are experiencing symptoms, it’s important to get checked so you can manage any infection you may have. PSA levels may rise with prostatitis, giving you a false notion that you may have prostate cancer. Therefore, treating and maintaining your prostatitis is important to make sure your PSA levels are kept normal.
